Mattijs Taanman finished the MSc-programme ‘Technology and Society’ (focussing on energy policy) with a thesis on a model describing the potential diffusion of various hydrogen-based technological clusters. During his studies he was involved in the development of various courses on Technology and Sustainability at the institute Technology for Sustainable Development.

Afterwards he continued working at Eindhoven Technical University as a co-author on a book on the history of the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN).

Currently, in his PhD-research he develops a tool to monitor transition processes. In this project, carried out by DRIFT and TNO, he looks both at society-wide developments indicating the progress of transitions and at the transition management efforts of actors committed to this process and their impacts.
