Frank van Steenbergen
Researcher
Frank van Steenbergen obtained his Bachelor in Communication & Management (Hogeschool Utrecht) and his Master in Sociology (Universiteit van Amsterdam). He joined Drift in 2010.
During the studies above he focused on (governmental) communication strategies, urban governance, and migration and diversity issues. His masterthesis dealt with the dynamics of minority policy in Amsterdam and Rotterdam in a comparative and historical perspective. Via a discourse and institutional analysis the thesis showed that while Amsterdam advocates to ‘keep things together’, civil society is dismantled through neoliberal policy incentives. Whereas Rotterdam’s civil society maintained a rather stable position despite a discourse that advocates a ‘post-multicultural’ or ‘multiculturealism’ rhetoric.
Recurrent themes in his work are social inequality, power relations, urban development, governance of (urban) marginality, participatory processes, civil society, social movements, self-organization, and citizenship and state relations.
Most of his work at Drift relates to neighborhoods or districts in deprived urban areas. He is also actively involved in exploring innovative forms of (urban) governance.
As a researcher he is currently working on the following projects: InContext (EU-project), Veerkracht Carnisse, Minor Sociaal-duurzame wijk (together with TU Delft and Veldacademie Rotterdam), Wijkarena Oud-Charlois (neighbourhood arena), MUSIC (EU-project), Kenniswerkplaats Leefbare Wijken and the monitoring of Wijkconciërge-pilot.
